Wow. The reverse field run on the Foxwoods casino location was fast enough to make Andy Reid envious and send the rest of our heads spinning.
Unlike the waterfront location which had been extensively publicized long before it was licensed, this proposed move to the Gallery at Market East (see related news stories) came out of the blue.
Residents in neighboring Chinatown are up in arms -- like those on the river were -- and should be treated no differently. Businesses there, however, may take a different view. What’s needed now is a top-to-bottom airing of the pros and cons.
The Gallery would certainly be more convenient to Convention Center trade. But honestly, if you’re planning a vacation in Philadelphia with a casino focus, where would you rather be -- a scenic riverfront or the Gallery?
Can it change the Gallery’s fading fortunes? Possibly, but that’s another gamble.
How about center city congestion? Proponents point to the incredible transit hub right under the building. But where will casino visitors park in the suburbs to catch the trains? Those SEPTA lots are already jammed.
We still must hear from more neighbors, businesses, tourism and historical interests, not to mention the casino licensing board. It promises to be a long, drawn out process.
Meanwhile, the city budget, which includes anticipated gambling revenue, is shrinking like credits on a slot machine.
