Pa. Attorney General Deflects Questions About Partisanship in ''Bonusgate'' Probe

by KYW's Tony Romeo

Ending rampant speculation about his so-called “bonusgate” probe of the Pennsylvania state legislature, state attorney general Tom Corbett on Monday announced that there will be no further charges brought before the November elections.

The first twelve people charged in Corbett’s investigation were all Democrats (see related stories). Speaking at a Pennsylvania Press Club luncheon in Harrisburg on Monday, Corbett said the grand jury will sit only one more week before the election, and that his office will not be able to present all the necessary evidence to complete the next phase of the investigation at that time.

Corbett said he is prepared for the inevitable criticism:

“An investigation like this, no matter what you do, you’re going to be criticized. I can’t worry about criticism. All I can worry about is that our office does the job the right way.”

Shortly after Corbett’s announcement, a Rendell spokesman said that the governor believes that if the attorney general has information that’s relevant to voters, then voters should have that information.

Corbett says the election is an artificial deadline and that the next phase of the probe is “just not ready.”
