Floodwaters Topple 19th Century Canal Wall Near Philadelphia

Floodwaters have toppled a 170-year-old stone wall on the Delaware Canal in suburban Philadelphia.

The 12-foot-high, four-foot-thick wall between the Delaware River and canal in Durham had already been weakened by Hurricane Ivan in 2004 and two later floods. The wall gave in to flooding from rain in Upper Bucks County over the Sept. 27 weekend.

Officials say the wall will be repaired, but it is unclear whether it will be done as part of the current $40 million restoration project. The 19th century canal and towpath was used to transport goods by barge between Philadelphia and Easton.
