Phila. Councilman Claims Defamation in Suit Against Resident

by KYW's Mike Dunn

A Philadelphia city councilman who nearly lost his bid for re-election last year is now suing a resident who allegedly distributed a flyer that the councilman says defamed him.

Republican city councilman Jack Kelly (above, in file photo), who squeaked by his chief opponent in last year's general election, has now filed a defamation lawsuit against Paul Corbett, who was not a candidate.

Kelly believes Corbett distributed a flyer in that campaign criticizing Kelly for voting in favor to terminate the Boy Scouts' lease with the city.

Council had taken that action because the local Scouts have not renounced the national Scouts' policy on homosexuals.
George Bochetto, Kelly's attorney, says politicians are used to being criticized.  But this flyer, he says, crossed the line:

"When you start accusing an elected official of sodomizing our youth and pandering to the pedophiles and so forth, its just so beyond the pale that something needs to be done."

Corbett's attorney could not immediately be reached for comment.
