A.C. Casino Smoking Ban Likely to Last 12 Days

by KYW's Mike DeNardo

A total ban on smoking in Atlantic City, NJ casinos took effect on Wednesday.  But don't get used to it.

Smoking is now banned in all Atlantic City casinos.  But it's likely to be only a 12-day ban. City council is scheduled to meet October 27th, when they're expected to lift their ban for a year to allow the casinos to try to rebound from the sagging economy.

Harrah's spokeswoman Alyce Parker says for now, though, gamblers cannot light up:

"As of today, our casino properties will abide by the intent of the law of the Atlantic City Council."

The only place smoking is currently allowed, is in separate lounges without slot machines or gaming tables:

"There'll be signage throughout the casinos. Our employees will direct our smoking customers to the smoking lounges."

Should council put the full ban on hold for a year, smoking would be permitted on 25 percent of the casino floor.
