Phila. Watchdog Group Expects Overcrowded Polling Places on Election Day

by KYW's Mike Dunn

Philadelphia officials say more than 1.1 million residents are registered for the Nov. 4th election. And the city's political watchdog group is worried about overcrowded polling places in some neighborhoods.

The Committee of 70 says 16 divisions in the city are way beyond the state limit for number of registered voters.

The group's policy director, Sarah Stevenson, says those divisions are in center city, near the University of Pennsylvania and Drexel University in West Philadelphia, and in the northeast:

"The threshold in the state election code is 1,200 voters per division. Some divisions here are just over 1,200, but some have three times as many voters."

The committee had asked city elections officials to actually split those divisions by adding new polling locations.

The city commissioners office says there's not enough time to do that, but they are adding extra voting machines to those locations. Still, get set for crowds.
