New Jersey governor Jon Corzine was in the Assembly chambers at the Trenton statehouse on Thursday afternoon, proposing his own economic crisis response to a joint session of the legislature.
Corzine (above) told lawmakers that they cannot just stand idly by. He said that together he is confident that good choices will made and strong action will be taken to recover from the difficult economic times.
He proposed a plan addressing four broad areas:
"First, it provides immediate assistance to those in greatest need. Second, it directly supports short-term employment and economic activity. Third, it works to enhance the business climate on a long-term basis and enhance our economic prospects. And fourth, it addresses our obligation to remain fiscally responsible even during a time of declining revenues and rising demands."
He wants $3 million to go to food banks on an emergency basis, and for small businesses he wants to provide a $3,000 tax credit for each incremental, full-time hire that is retained for one year.
