2 Teens Wounded in Shooting Outside Olney High School

by KYW's Mike Dunn

Gunfire rang out Wednesday morning outside of Olney High School, leaving two students wounded.

The gunman was still on the loose Wednesday afternoon as police continue their investigation.

Detectives say at least six shots were fired at 8:45am on the street outside Olney High.

Investigators say a 17-year-old male student was arguing with a gunman, who shot him in the leg.  An 18-year-old female student was caught in the crossfire and shot in the buttocks.

The two victims were rushed to Einstein Hospital, where they were listed in stable condition.

While police questioned several people, the school went into a lockdown.  We talked by cell phone with Alexis, a senior inside:

"When the bell rang and we tried to go out of class, they just rushed us back in and said we weren't allowed to leave."

School district CEO Paul Vallas says school was the safest place for kids, until police gave the all-clear:

"Our standard operating procedure is, if there's a shooting in the community, I'm not letting the kids out."

Classes continued, but parents were allowed to take their children home if they wanted.

Witnesses say as soon as the shots rang out, the male victim ran into the school to escape further gunfire.

Philadelphia police chief inspector Joseph Fox says the scene outside the school was "chaotic" immediately after the shootings.  He says some witnesses thought they saw a gunman in a car, others said the shooter escaped on foot.

Police combed the area and across the school's rooftop (right) and the rooftops of nearby homes.  Investigators placed markers by at least six shell casings found outside the school, which is located on Front St., near Ashdale.
