A 59-year-old Delaware County, Pa. man has pleaded no contest to charges that he left his grandson to die in a hot car outside his workplace last June (see related story).
A judge handed down a sentence of probation and community service.
Edward Kanterman, 59, told judge Barry Dozor that he’ll have to live with the death of 14-month-old Nicholas McCorkle for the rest of his life.
The toddler was supposed to be dropped off at daycare, but was left in Kanterman’s car as he went to work -- with temperatures rising into the 90s on that June day.
Dozor sentenced Kanterman to three years' probation and 200 hours community service.
Delaware County DA Mike Green:
"It was not a plea bargain. Mr. Kanterman indicated his remorse. He opened the door to what happened in court."
Green called this case a “tremendous family tragedy” for Kanterman and his daughter, but insisted his office could not just ignore what happened here.
