Professor Criminal Background Check

by KYW's Amy Feldman

Wharton, the prestigious business school of the University of Pennsylvania, was ranked recently as the #1 business school in the nation, according to the Financial Times.
But Wharton’s press has not been all good recently; not one but two Wharton professors were taken off the teaching roster this year—one for allegedly murdering his wife, the other after pleading guilty to producing child porn. As acceptances to colleges and universities are being sent and you are choosing your school, you want to know: what background checks are colleges doing on the people who will be moulding your intellect?

Right now, there are no nationwide standards for background checks done on the people in the classroom. Many of the big ten universities do perform criminal background checks, but at present the ivy league universities—even those that screen other employees—don’t require criminal background checks. That said, virtually all professors at every college and university go through an extensive screening process so you are better off spending your time worrying about the homework given by the professor rather than his or her criminal history.
