Michelle Durham's FBI Diary

For the first time in its history, the FBI has allowed a reporter to participate in new agent's training.

Here are the diaries, reports and videos filed by KYW's Michelle Durham during her behind-the-scenes look inside the FBI Academy at Quantico, Virginia.

Part 1 - "I Do Solemnly Swear..."
An FBI agent's career begins with an oath.   "I do solemnly swear that I will support and defend the constitution of the United States against all enemies foreign and domestic......"
Part 2 - Staying In Shape
The first test that future FBI agents receive when they arrive at Quantico occurs on day two, and it's a test they've taken before - the Fit Test.
Part 3 - Defensive Driving Training
All new agents are required to go through defensive driving classes so they know what their cars are capable of doing during high speed chases.  New agents take turns being navigators and drivers during a violent two- to three-minute exercise.

Part 4 - Facing Adversity
Michelle introduces you to an FBI Training Academy classmate, whose story of courage in the face of adversity is an incredible one.  His family -- including parents, siblings, grandparents and uncles -- came to the United Stats to escape the violent civil war in Cambodia, and ultimately wound up in West Philadelphia.

Part 5 - A Walk Through Hogan's Alley
Hogan's Alley on the FBI Campus in Quantico Virginia is perhaps the best-known training facility in the world.  It's literally a small town that includes a bank, motel, working restaurant and other buildings.  It gives new agents a chance to safely practice the skills they've just learned in the classroom -- before they go out in the field.
Part 6 - The FBI Lab and 9/11
On September 11, 2001, the United States suffered the worst terror attack ever on American soil, and the FBI responded.  The response included a unit of agents who not only processed the crime scenes, but later put together all of the evidence exhibits for the trial of Zacarias Moussaoui.

Supervisory Visual Information Specialist Paula Ernst (pictured) spent 9/11 at the Pentagon.
Part 7 - Analyzing DNA
The FBI laboratory in Quantico, Virginia is home to NDIS -- the National DNA Index System.  It's the tool law enforcement agencies all over the country use when looking for a DNA match to material they find at a crime scene.  The NDIS Unit Chief is Thomas Callahan, who was born in Philadelphia and grew up in Langhorne.

Part 8 - Defending Yourself
When you become an FBI agent, putting yourself in harm's way becomes part of the job.  And learning to defend yourself in all kinds of situations becomes crucial.   Today's lesson is all about defending yourself against someone coming at you with a knife.
Part 9 - The FBI Profilers
The FBI Special Agents assigned to the Behavioral Analysis Unit see the toughest cases in country, and are called in by state and local police agencies across the country to help solve serial murders and rapes.   It's located in a secure, undisclosed location inside the FBI Training Academy in Quantico, Virginia.

Part 10 - Day One at Squad 10
It's the first day at Squad 10, the Violent Crimes Task Force in Philadelphia.  It's a group of professionals made up of Philadelphia police officers and FBI Special Agents.  The assignment today:  track down a "Bonnie and Clyde" couple that officals want in connection with some local bank robberies.

Part 11 - Day Two in Squad 10
Michelle continues here work with Philadelphia FBI's Squad 10 the violent crimes squad whose focus is armed and bank robberies.  She's part of the team parked in front of a Northeast Philadelphia bank to see if the suspects will return to the scene of the crime.

Part 12 - A Robbery In Progress
It started out as a quiet day at Squad 10, until a radio call goes out about a bank robbery in progress.   We're at Aramingo Avenue in minutes.
