Hogan's Alley on the FBI Campus in Quantico Virginia is perhaps the best-known training facility in the world.
Hogan's Alley is literally a small town that includes a bank, motel, working restaurant and other buildings. It gives new agents a chance to safely practice the skills they've just learned in the classroom -- before they go out in the field.
Greg is an instructor and he explains today's assignment:
"This is what we call a purse snatch scenario (for) new agent trainees. We give them an assignment to go interview someone (photo at right).
As they approach the building, they witness a purse snatching that is violent in nature -- and they have to make a decision."
(Sound of woman screaming; people running.)
"FBI! Don't move!! Don't move!! Don't move!! (Sound of shots fired.)
It's my turn to go one in the buildings to look for criminals.
Cardboard cut-outs of criminals in different poses -- some literally pointing a gun right at you -- pop up unexpectedly. You've got to decide in a split second whether they're a threat.
"We look before we enter," Greg says. "We don't see anything. Ultimately we have to go in and clear it.
(Michelle) : "FBI!! Hands up!" "Absolutely a threat."
(Greg): "Okay, we engage from there."
(Michelle): "FBI!!"
The suspect continues to point the weapon at me.
(Michelle fires a gun)
(Greg): "Okay, we shoot to kill. "Threat is eliminated."
