Temple Univ. Releases Study on Obesity and Lack of Exercise

by KYW’s Lynne Adkins

Ever wonder why obese people just don't hit the gym to lose the weight? Local researchers did and have found some interesting reasons.

Doctors often tell patients to eat less and exercise more, sound advice, but not always easy. Dr. Melissa Napolitano, associate professor of kinesiology and public health at Temple University says a study of obese women found several important psychological reasons they won't or can't hit the gym:

“I think a lot of times the recommendation from a practitioner or physician includes just go out for a walk, that may sound easy, but there may be other barriers or factors that might influence women being able to do that.”

She says participants stated they wouldn't exercise because they were afraid to fail; they felt self conscious, had minor aches and pains and were afraid of getting hurt. She says if doctors understand the reasons some obese women won't exercise, they can work with patients to find situations where they will.
