SEPTA Trains Packed to Capacity Ahead of Parade

by KYW's Pat Loeb

SEPTA was reporting at least 30 minute delays on all regional rail services on Friday morning due to an extremely high volume of passengers. Some trains were speeding past stations because cars were already at capacity.

Fans looking to attend the Phillies' victory parade were still advised that mass transit is the best way to get into the city, but delays are to be expected.

This is what Septa predicted, but it started a little earlier than they expected. And, even knowing in advance they were going to be trying to accommodate large crowds, there's not much Septa could do.

Felipe Suarez is a Septa spokesman:

"We knew we were going to be overwhelmed; that was our message yesterday, that we would operate service but anticipate delays. Be patient, expect overcrowding. We're starting to see that."

Suarez says there's only so much equipment on the rail lines. The Market-Frankford subway-elevated and Broad St. subway lines can accommodate the crowds a little more easily, but the buses are also experiencing long delays.

The New Jersey River Line was running double its normal service.  And Patco says it was running trains every six minutes to handle the crush of Phillies fans coming into town.
