Pa. Senate Votes To Regulate Tickets Resold Over The Net

by KYW's Tony Romeo

The Pennsylvania Senate has passed and sent to the House legislation that would regulate the resale of tickets to concerts, sports and other events over the Internet.

Bucks County Republican State Senator Tommy Tomlinson sponsored the bill, which would require that businesses reselling tickets over the Internet have offices in Pennsylvania and provide refunds if there are problems:

“And if you do get a ticket that, the concert was cancelled, if you get a ticket that does not coincide with what you ordered, it’s not the right seat, it’s in the wrong section, or if it’s just an invalid ticket, there’s recourse for the consumer.”

During debate on the Senate floor, one critic of the legislation said the bill simply legitimizes an underground economy, and argued that there should be a cap on the mark-up on tickets resold on the Internet.

But Tomlinson says the bill would bring regulation to a presently uncontrolled business and says imposing a cap would discourage legitimate businesses from participating in the market.
