If you don’t know Ben Franklin from William Penn, you shouldn’t be a tour guide. So says a city councilwoman, who is introducing a plan that would require guides pass a history test.
Councilwoman Blondell Reynolds Brown says tour guides working for the sightseeing companies can mash up history, and that, she says, hurts tourism:
“They’re not up to speed on what the actual facts are. And Philadelphia is rich with cultural treasures and historical facts that we need to be clear and accurate about.”
Reynolds Brown is introducing a bill that would require certificates for tour guides, and they’d have to pass a written history test annually to get that certificate.
And she says the tour guides would wear the certificate while they work so visitors would be assured their guide knows what he or she is talking about.
