Part 8 - Defending Yourself

by KYW's Michelle Durham

When you become an FBI agent, putting yourself in harm's way becomes part of the job.  And learning to defend yourself in all kinds of situations becomes crucial.

Today's lesson is all about defending yourself against someone coming at you with a knife.  Instructor Mike Veong explains why you can't afford to fail this class:

"Our main goal in this class is to teach you how -- whether it's with your firearm, whether it's with hand to hand combat, that if you are in a confrontation which, by choosing this profession you are pretty much setting yourself up to be in a confrontation for however long you are here with the bureau that you have the tools to survive."

"The most important thing at the end of the day is that you go home. Okay?

(Class responds): "Yes, Sir! "

Now I'm paired with Henry, and what I quickly realize is that there are many steps to taking someone down.  It's not as easy as it looks.

(Henry): "Grab the wrist and bend the wrist over..."

(Michelle): "Like that?"

(Henry):  "Yeah.

(Michelle): "And then the force the arm and shoulder all the way down?"

(Henry): "Step back with your back leg.  Yeah...exactly."

(Michelle): "Oh, okay."

Now keeping all that in mind, Henry comes at me with the knife.  And I have to deflect or redirect his attack.

(Sound of fighting)

"Very good."  (laughing)  "Very good.  That's great.."

(Instructor): "Time!"

(Henry): "And you kept your balance.  Remind me not to get you mad."
