The Pennsylvania Turnpike is the latest agency to reduce its workforce in the face of declining business.
The Pennsylvania Turnpike is offering a buyout to an as yet undetermined number of employees. Spokesman Carl DeFebo says it’s one of a series of belt-tightening measures resulting from a decline in turnpike traffic, which is normally about 185 million vehicles a year:
“This is basically a response to a drop off in traffic volumes just from June through September of 1.6 percent. I mean, when you consider that we’ve got about 185 million vehicles on the turnpike, that does add up to a significant downturn.”
DeFebo says there could be layoffs, depending on the response to the buyout offer. He says employees have until Monday to respond to the offer, which is two weeks of pay for every five years of service, up to a maximum of eight weeks.
