Pa. Substance Abuse Center Honors Recent Retiree

by KYW's John Ostapkovich

A Bensalem-based substance abuse treatment center is ready to honor a recent retiree for service long beyond when many would have called it quits.

Clyde Bertram, 88, pulled the plug at the end of October, for the second time. He says his first retirement ended in financial trouble at age 75, and he got a job as a counselor at the Livengrin Foundation

It's work close to his heart as Bertram is a recovering alcoholic himself, but he says that isn't necessarily what allows him to relate to patients:

"Regardless of what your life has been like, if you are good therapist with a good intuition for patients, whether you're a recovering person or not, you can offer an awful lot of help to the patient."

Bertram, who will be honored at Livingrin's Alumni Breakfast December 14th, says patients who are determined to recover can.  He plans to continue to work to help them, albeit informally.
