Montco. Teacher Accused of Assaulting Student

by KYW's Brad Segall

A 45-year-old teacher at a Catholic elementary school in Collegeville, Montgomery County, has been arrested, accused of inappropriately touching a student at the school over a two-year period.

The 11-year-old fourth-grader at St. Eleanor’s School told police that Vito Granieri began giving him candy and touching him when he was in the second grade. Police said Granieri was an Information Technology teacher at the school and the boy would help him move equipment between classrooms and the computer lab.

District attorney Risa Ferman said the boy reported the alleged incidents earlier this month:

“It is very typical in cases of touching involving children where the initial touching is done in such a benign way that it doesn’t raise a child’s concern, and often times, children are subject to this kind of touching and they don’t tell right away.”

Bail for Granieri was set at $100-thousand, ten percent.

Officials with the Archdiocese of Philadelphia said they are upset to learn about the charges and added they were cooperating fully with the investigation.

Ferman said there may be more children involved.
