Phila. Plans to Show Bird Flu Facts vs. Fiction

by KYW's Mike Dunn

Tuesday night’s ABC movie about a fictional bird flu pandemic has prompted Philadelphia officials to post their real-life emergency response plan online.

Until now the city Health Department’s pandemic response plan has been kept under wraps as the experts fine-tune it.

Now, with the airing of the TV movie, the local plan is going on the city’s web site, according to Dr. Caroline Johnson of the division of disease control:

“The plan is complete, although we have to realize all plans are a work in progress.”

Dr. Johnson (left) says the plan itself is quite technical, but the site also has some citizen-friendly information:

“There are some general guidance documents about what citizens can do to protect themselves.  And in particular we posted a document that puts this avian flu movie in context”

..meaning the city is trying to separate the facts of a pandemic threat from the fiction of the television movie.

Philadelphia officials said the pandemic plan was expected to be posted on the city's web site, www.phila.gov, by 5pm Tuesday.
