Phila. Police Dedicate Plaque to Slain Officer Barclay

by KYW's Tony Hanson

A Philadelphia police officer who was shot 42-years-ago, and who died last year, has been honored with a plaque dedicated in his memory and in tribute to his service.

Officer Walter Barclay, at the age of 23, was barely more than a rookie when he was shot while chasing a burglar (see related story).

He was paralyzed and his sister, Rosalyn Harrison, says he suffered his whole life, but he survived to the age of 65 because of his deep faith and his fierce determination.

She was moved by the ceremony:

"He would have been utterly stunned by it, just amazed, because he was really a shy guy and he didn't think of himself as a hero. He was a cop to himself. He would never believe this, never believe it. It was so wonderful."

William Barnes, who served about 20 years for the shooting, is now awaiting trial for murder.
