Rendell Wants Pa. to Blend US Alternative Fuels With Gas

by KYW’s Tony Romeo

Governor Ed Rendell says he wants Pennsylvania to require gasoline and diesel fuel to be blended with domestically-produced alternative fuels to reduce dependence on foreign oil.

One of the policy cornerstones of Governor Rendell’s tenure has been promoting energy independence through the use of alternative fuels.

The governor said Wednesday he wants to require oil-based fuel to be blended with alternative fuels, with the ultimate the goal of replacing 900 million gallons of gas and diesel with alternatives -- the amount of fuel projected to be imported to Pennsylvania from the Persian Gulf ten years from now:

“We’re going to work with the legislature, work with all of the stakeholders in this, to try to determine if 900 [million gallons] is a reasonable goal. Maybe they’ll tell us 900 is too low. Maybe we’ll shoot a little bit higher than that.”

Rendell says four other states have implemented fuel standards. He hopes to have legislation drafted by the end of July that would add Pennsylvania to the list.
