New ''Forever'' Stamp Makes Its Debut

by KYW's Mark Abrams

The US Post Office officially rolled out its new "forever" stamp  -- featuring an image of the Liberty Bell -- Thursday morning.

The new stamp sells for 41 cents, and it's designed to be good to cover future postal rate increases.

Postal Service spokeswoman Cathy Yarosky says a special ceremony at the Liberty Bell pavilion will mark the occasion, and a center city post office will serve as a central distribution point:

"We're going to have a special booth and retail table set up Thursday morning, beginning about 8am, at the William Penn Annex post office, which is located at 9th and Market Streets in downtown Philadelphia."

Yarosky says the postal rate increase (to 41 cents from 39 cents) doesn't take effect until May 14th. However, she says, you can begin using the new stamps immediately.

The price of the "forever" stamp will go up as postal rates rise, but old ones will still be good for mailing a letter.

The stamps will come in books of 20. Postal officials say there is no limit on purchases.

The USPS expects the forever stamp to be popular with consumers. But it believes special commemorative stamps will continue to sell well also.
