Mothers Tell Story of 'Living Poor in Phila.' at Drexel Univ.

by KYW's Karin Phillips

An exhibit on the campus of Drexel University is the work of 40 mothers with 40 cameras, telling their stories of how it is to live poor in Philadelphia.

It is a photo of 24-year-old Erica Smalley of North Philadelphia, mother of two young daughters.  A self-portrait, her hair is unkempt and her eyes are full of tears.

She says that's how it gets sometimes, in the constant struggle to get somewhere:

"I think people assume that this is the life we want to live, or we choose to be welfare recipients. This story will have them understand that we are women who are actually motivated to have a change."

Dr. Mariana Chilton - poverty and hunger research - is the project director.  She says the project gave the women a voice"

"Anything that you want to change. The whole point is that now you have to the camera, you have the power, you have the voice."
