Hundreds of demonstrations take place nationwide Saturday urging action on global warming and a big one locally will be on Independence Mall.
The National Day of Climate Action rally from noon to 2pm Saturday has two main priorities, says organizer Pamela Tudor: one, pressure Congress to legislate an 80 percent reduction in carbon emissions by 2050, two: encourage personal lifestyle changes that reduce what's called a person's carbon footprint.
Tudor says the location, a block from Independence Hall, is a reflection that "We the People" are called to act:
"This is really to encourage citizens, individuals, human beings, to say we can do something. We'll provide the leadership. Our government has not provided the leadership."
The rally's attractions include entertainment, appearances by some mayoral candidates, sponsor booths and a hybrid SEPTA bus. For more information, go to stepitupphilly.org.
