Philadelphia police say a man who threatened his landlady and then lunged at arriving police officers with butcher knives was shot by police on Monday night inside a Kensington home.
Police say the man was taken to Temple University with a gunshot wound of the chest and was listed in critical but stable condition.
Investigators say police were called to the 2900 block of Kip Street shortly before 11:30pm.
When they two 24th District police officers arrived, police say the landlady told them her tenant came home intoxicated and threatened her. When the officers went inside, investigators say they found the man sleeping on a couch with two butcher knives - one in each hand.
Police say when they woke him up, he pointed the knives at himself. As police tried to talk him into surrendering, police say he then turned the knives on one of the officers and began lunging at one of them with the blades.
Authorities say the officer's partner shot the man. Police were not releasing his name as of 6am on Tuesday.
