Race for Philadelphia's DA Post Heats Up

by KYW's Mike Dunn

Longtime Philadelphia district attorney Lynne Abraham (above in file photo) is in the final year of her term and will not run for that office again. A handful of candidates are already lining up to succeed her.

Attorney Seth Williams, who challenged Lynne Abraham for DA in the primary four years ago, is trying again, but this time without the incumbent in the race. He is not worried that Abraham will put her clout behind another challenger:

"No I'm not very concerned about that. I have a lot of political support in 2009 that I didn't have in 2005."

Also running is former city councilman Dan McElhatton, who is challenging all the challengers to a debate:

"I'm calling for at least five debates between the candidates, to have them in various regions of the city.

As many as four other Democrats are said to be running or considering a run for DA, including Dan McCaffrey, brother of state Supreme Court justice Seamus McCaffrey.

Whoever runs will square off in the primary on May 19th.
