The Delaware Valley was bracing itself on Tuesday for another blast from Old Man Winter. AccuWeather says a sleet-filled wintry mix promised to make travel tough in time for the evening commute.
Preparations were underway before noon for this storm. Penndot workers were out, putting brine and/or salt on area roadways to try to minimize the effect of the ice as it hits the pavement.
Penndot's Gene Blaum says this type of storm presents more of a challenge:
"We would much rather deal with a snowstorm then a storm with a prolonged period of ice, because if there are parts of the pavement that have not received the salt, the ice can just bond to pavement immediately."
...And quickly close down highways, as we've seen in the past.
At Philadelphia International Airport, they were keeping one eye on the sky. But airport spokeswoman Phyllis Van Istendhal says travelers should check with their airline before they leave the house.
SEPTA says they'll have to see how the buses navigate certain bus routes in Manayunk and Roxborough. As of noon everything was fine, but that was subject to change!
And SEPTA spokesman Richard Maloney warned that regional rail platforms may be slick, so use extra caution while going on and off trains.
