A funeral service was scheduled for Thursday for John Travolta and Kelly Preston's son Jett in Ocala, Florida after the 16-year-old's tragic death in the Bahamas (see related AP story).
Both actors are devoted followers of the Church of Scientology. What is a Scientology funeral service like?
Church of Scientology International spokesperson Tommy Davis says like many other faiths, a Scientology funeral celebrates the person's life:
"In Scientology we believe that you the individual are an immortal spiritual being. You've lived before, you will live again. So when you talk about a Scientology funeral you are talking about acknowledging that somebody for the life they've lived and thanking them for all of the joy and all of the wonderful things they've brought to their life and the lives of the people who they touched and wishing them well in their next life."
A Scientology funeral celebration includes a minister who preaches church teachings, music and a eulogy. Davis says the Church will do all it can to help the Travolta's cope with the loss and move on with their lives -- as hard as that is.
