Mayoral Hopefuls Promise Better Health Care If Elected

by KYW's Steve Tawa

Mayoral candidates wooed older folks Tuesday at 'Center in the Park' along Germantown avenue at the AARP-sponsored forum, promising their needs would be a priority, when the next mayor takes over City Hall.

Former Councilman Michael Nutter says he's worked with many senior organizations over his nearly 15 years in public office. Nutter says he knows the "value, wisdom and knowledge" that seniors bring, because he grew up living in a household with a grandmother:

"My grandmother never had to tell me something more than once. i never took a chance on a second warning."

Congressman Chaka Fattah says his grandmother told him one thing when he went to Washington: "Don't mess with my social security.":

"It's wonderful we have great candidates. What you need to think about is what we have done on senior issues, not just what we say we're going to do."

Businessman Tom Knox, the former CEO of United Healthcare of Pennsylvania, says as mayor, he'll make sure everyone gets their health care needs met:

"I've proposed that we have 40 new health care centers throughout the city; these new health care centers are designed to see people within 15 minutes."

At the end of the forum - a staple at a senior get-together - a raffle.

A nice lady is going to the Tropicana.
