A construction contractor is under arrest in Montgomery County, Pa., accused of stealing money from a prominent church in Jenkintown where he was hired to oversee a major project.
Prosecutors say Walter Logan of Radnor signed a $3-million deal with the Salem Baptist Church more than four years ago for construction and renovation.
But according to court papers, the church began getting complaints two years later from subcontractors who said they weren’t getting paid for their work. The project was never completed.
Montgomery County district attorney Risa Ferman says Logan faces a number of charges including theft and deceptive business practices:
"He was entrusted by the church with overseeing a major construction project. He took money from them; he hired people to do work; and then he ripped off his subcontractors, never paid them, and pocketed the money for himself.”
Prosecutors believe that amounts to more than $370,000.
The investigation is continuing, and charges are pending against another person. The church paid another $1 million to hire a contractor to finish the project.
