Philadelphia police are now armed with guides that includes tips, attractions, and even popular cheesesteak locations, to help visitors make their experience in the city more enjoyable.
Paul Levy, executive director of the Center City District, says officers normally focus on serious crime issues, as they should, but many visitors get an impression of the city based on their interaction with the locals.
And, says Levy, the small things matter:
"If they don't know where they are, they walk up to a person in uniform."
Police commissioner Charles Ramsey says his officers do get around but they don't know everything:
"You're familiar with the area you work in, and maybe the neighborhood in which you grew up. So these things will be invaluable."
New recruits will also get refresher courses as part of their training.
The compact guides include general descriptions of neighborhood boundaries, and the locations of visitor centers, historic sites, center city entertainment venues, public bathrooms, and information about museum row on the Parkway.
They also have a handful of the most asked-for cheesesteak locations, to round out that perfect visit to Philadelphia.
