More Freelancers Surface Amid Economic Downturn

by KYW's Michelle Durham

As the nation's economy continues to slump, more people are opting to work for themselves as opposed to traditional employment from one company.

Labor statistics show more than 10.3 million people in the US make their living this way.

Freelance writer Beth Diadono feels she's better off then those working for one company:

"I'm actually celebrating 20 years as a freelancer in 2009, this year. So I have a lot of experience with ups and downs."

Diadono knows of many who have been laid off while she continues, but says she does have to work harder.

Pam Kokkalis from the Graduate Career Management Center at the Fox School of Business agrees:

"I've seen personally a lot of people do better off on their own because they are able to get the word of mouth going for them and because they are on short contracts, it's easy for a company to say 'yeah, I'll hire you for the next three, four six months.'"

But Kokkalis says a freelancer's success also depends on what industry they are in.

As for Diadono, she continues to network and juggle a number of different writing assignments in these tough times.
