For the 18th consecutive year, the Labrador retriever is the most popular dog, according to 2008 registration records released by the American Kennel Club.
But the breed may not be for everyone, a local expert warns.
On the plus side, Labrador retrievers aim to please -- they're lovable and loyal, and make great family pets with proper training, says "Peggie" of Bucks County, Pa., who has been breeding Labrador retrievers for 20 years.
She says Labs can be a lot of work, though:
"The big thing is, you should research the breed. They are very high energy. They are not a kind of dog that can be stuck in a crate and left without training.
"You know, they can turn into an out-of-control dog very quick. They are puppies till they are at least three years old. They chew, they jump, they can be wild, and they need guidance. From the very day you bring your puppy home, they need training."
Peggie says she loves the breed and is concerned that many Labs will end up in shelters after owners discover they can't handle them.
