A Philadelphia City Council committee on Tuesday agreed to more than triple the fine for people who try to rip "boot" immobilization devices off their cars.
Parking authority chief Vince Fennerty told the City Council committee that about 300 times a year, people try wrenching the boot devices off their tires to avoid being towed:
“There are people in the city that think they can cut a boot off. It's illegal.”
Fennerty is mum on how it's done:
“The boots are very sophisticated. I don’t believe it is crow-bar oriented. And I will not comment further because I don’t want to give anyone any ideas.”
Because of the rising cost of the boots, Fennerty asked the committee to raise the fine to those who are caught -- from $300 to $700. The committee went a step further and boosted the fine to an even $1,000.
The bill now goes to the full Council for its approval.
