In 1955, Rosa Parks was riding a crowded Montgomery, Alabama bus. When she refused to give up her seat to a white man, the bus driver had her arrested. At the police station, she was fingerprinted. Her arrest triggered the Montgomery bus boycott and the civil rights movement.

Part II: Advisory Board Member Dr. Cornel West

In this report, KYW's community affairs reporter Karin Phillips speaks to Dr. Cornel West, a member of the advisory board of the "America I Am" exhibit.

by KYW's Karin Phillips

Although Dr. Cornel West is a professor of religion and African American studies at Princeton University, he might be best known as one of America's most provocative philosophers and public intellectuals.

Dr. West (right) says "America I Am" has itself become a part of American history:

"It's a very, very special historic moment -- right alongside the beginning of the Age of Obama. The timing could not be better. It's providential."

And he says that while "America I Am" is a celebration of the African-American, it examines all of the history:

"You see perseverance -- you see those who keep keeping on.  But it does still look unflinchingly at the oppression, and just says that's not the end of the story."
