There are several ways to detect when your dog is feeling sick.
The most common way most people are familiar with is to check the dog’s nose. Most often, a cool wet nose means a healthy dog but be aware that a dry nose doesn’t necessarily indicate an unhealthy dog. It is true that a lethargic, possibly feverish dog may exhibit a dry nose but so might a healthy dog at some point throughout the day. You need to check other symptoms as well. Alternately, a dog with a respiratory problem may have an extremely wet nose but it may be excessively runny and will need to see your vet.
An occasional sneeze does not pose a problem, but excessive sneezing can. Other symptoms of illness or pain include vomiting, diarrhea, excessive intake of water, eating or drinking less, a decrease in appetite and decrease in water intake, difficulty in movement, tiredness, lack of energy, difficulty breathing, difficulty eating or eliminating and of course any changes in behavior. An ill or injured dog can be uncharacteristically aggressive or fearful and should be seen by your veterinarian right away.
