DUI Arrests in Pa. Hit Record High

by KYW's Tony Romeo

Pennsylvania State Police report that they made a record number of arrests for DUI last year.

Spokesman Jack Lewis says Pennsylvania State Police arrested 15,047 drivers for DUI in 2006. That’s a 10 percent increase over the 13,614 DUI arrests made in 2005, which was also a record:

“Well, unfortunately, it’s a bad sign that we still see so many people out on the roads drinking and driving. On the other hand, I think additional training for our troopers has resulted in additional arrests.”

But while the number of arrests for DUI are increasing, so are the number of vehicles on Pennsylvania roads. From 2004 to 2005, the number of registered vehicles on state roads increased by 650,000.

In 2006, Pennsylvania State Police investigated almost 4,700 alcohol-related crashes - a two percent increase over 2005.
