Newspaper Bankruptcy No Surprise to Temple J-School Prof.

by KYW's John Ostapkovich

The announced bankruptcy filing by the owners of the Philadelphia Inquirer and Daily News comes as no shock to a local journalism school professor.

Christopher Harper (above), associate professor of Journalism at Temple University, says newspapers and even TV are not serving the needs of young people raised in this hyperlinked age.

And, he says, to re-engage people of college age, newspapers should hire some:

"All news organizations need to think differently. They need to hire a bunch of my students (laughs) and put them in positions of power, and that way they'll have people playing an important role in their organizations to figure out how to get that key demographic back."

And not only through newspaper sales and subscriptions. Professor Harper says that revenue will follow eyeballs to web sites that speak to the needs of this new generation.
