City Council Demands Stronger Red Light Camera Penalties

by KYW’s Mike DeNardo

Philadelphia City Council is considering beefing-up the penalties for ignoring red light camera violations.

Parking Authority executive director Vince Fenerty told a City Council committee what an increasing number of scofflaws already know:

"Currently, there is no penalty for red light camera violators who do not pay their violations."

The ticket is $100, but right now the Parking Authority has no recourse if you ignore it.  A bill in Council would have cars belonging to violators booted and towed, and it would establish late fees starting at $20 for tickets that are 30 days overdue.

Fenerty says he's confident that Council will adopt the bill, even though the city law department doesn't believe Council has the authority to create penalties under the state law that allows the red light camera program.
