Former 76er Tim Perry Enjoying Life as a Coach at Holy Family

by KYW's Matt Leon

The name Tim Perry is a familiar one to Philadelphia basketball fans.  After a stellar career at Temple University, Perry spent several years with the 76ers.

And he's still in the area, serving as an assistant coach at Division II Holy Family University.

This is Perry's fourth season on the staff of Tigers' head coach Alfred Johnson.  He says that making the transitions from player to coach has given him a whole new appreciation for the things coaches told him over the years:

"Sometime as a young player you kind of think you know everything, but you've got to listen to the coach.  But at the same time you want to do it your way, also.  I see that here a little bit with the young guys -- they're a little defiant sometimes, but after a while they kind of see the big picture."

Perry is a member of the Big 5 Hall of Fame, and he remembers NBA Draft Day in 1988 vividly:

"I was real nervous the whole time because I kept getting phone calls: I was going seven, I was going five, I was going ten.  And I didn't really know where I was going to go. The one place I didn't want to go... didn't want to go to the Clippers (laughs)!"

Perry avoided the Clippers, going to Phoenix at seven. He spent eight years in the NBA including more than three with the Sixers, after coming over from Phoenix in the Charles Barkley trade.
