The horse a nation came to love will be honored next weekend at the race where he had his biggest, and as it would turn out, final triumph.
Barbaro’s Kentucky Derby win set the bar high for part two of racing’s Triple Crown last year. But he broke his leg at the Preakness, and after months of treatment for laminitis, had to be put down in late January.
At this year’s Derby, Churchill Downs will pay homage to Barbaro and his owners, Roy and Gretchen Jackson. Track spokeswoman Julie Koenig:
"We thought they set a tremendous example for horse owners around the country and around the world, really, in how to care for the horse and put the horse’s best interests first."
A charity in Barbaro’s name, with funds earmarked for equine medical research, will get 25,000 from the track. And the proceeds from sales of $2 wristbands. Those bands are available on line at www.ntra.com.
