First lady Michelle Obama told People magazine that the family is looking to rescue a Portuguese water dog in April. It was between that breed and a "Labradoodle" as first pet. Not everyone is happy with their choice.
"I wish he would pick another breed."
That's Portuguese water dog breeder Elanor Pierce of Regala Kennel in Bethel (Berks County), Pa. She has been involved with Portuguese water dogs since 1981.
She's afraid that the breed will be overbred and fall into questionable hands:
"It scares me a little bit because we, at this point, have not found Portuguese water dogs in pet stores or in the true puppy mills, and I don't want them to go there."
She says she is extremely cautious more than ever when placing her puppies into homes.
"I have gotten more inquiries than ever, especially in the month of January, which is typically not a month which I get inquiries for a puppy."
Barack and Michelle Obama are fulfilling a promise to their daughters that they would get a dog after the election.
Senator Ted Kennedy also has a Portuguese water dog, as seen in the photo above.
