News conferences are normally very orchestrated affairs, but that wasn't the case at one held by Mayor Nutter on Wednesday. Nutter was trying to out some tax deadbeats when one of them got in his face.
Mayor Nutter (in file photo) held a sidewalk news conference in front of the offices of three attorneys who collectively owe the city $350,000 in business taxes. As the event ended, one of the lawyers, Robert Gamburg, confronted the mayor:
Gamburg: "Did you bother to check to see whether or not I'm trying to make payment arrangements with the city?"
Nutter: "You owe the city money. Pay your taxes. Then we can have a different conversation."
Gamburg: "I'm in the process of working out a payment arrangement with the city. How many other people owe back taxes?"
Nutter: "A lot of people."
Gamburg: "Can I take a look at your list?"
Nutter: "I could do these (news conferences) morning, noon, and night."
Gamburg: "Then why was my name singled out?"
Nutter: "Because we picked you! Pay your taxes, and you don't have anything to worry about."
The two eventually went their separate ways, and the sheriff's office served notice of a lien on Gamburg's property.
