In honor of St Patrick’s Day, we have to celebrate the many dog breeds that originated in Ireland. They were originally bred as hunting dogs and now have become great companion dogs.
These breeds include the Irish Wolfhound, the sweet-natured, loyal and loving Sighthound originally bred to hunt wolves, the Irish Setter, also originally bred for hunting as well, and known for their stamina, intelligence, loyalty and sensitivity, the Irish Terrier, with the classic red color, known to be very social and full of life, and can most likely excel in agility training. There is also the Irish Water Spaniel with the distinguishable long curly coat, the largest of all the Spaniels, gentle, intelligent and an excellent swimmer, the Kerry Blue, loving, affectionate and originally bred as a rat catcher, the Kerry Beagle, one of the oldest hound breeds known to have originated in Ireland; they are extremely social hunting dogs, good with children and other dogs, and finally the Soft Coated Wheaton Terrier, a dog of many talents, originally bred as a herder, hunter and guard dog, friendly and eager to please.
