Freak Accident Leaves S. Jersey Nurse Seriously Injured

A school nurse was hospitalized after a metal rod crashed through her car windshield in Gloucester County, NJ on Monday morning, striking her in the eye.

On Tuesday morning, police were still trying to figure out where that object came from.

Investigators say 47-year-old Annette Coletta (right) was driving on Route 55 near Coles Mill Road in Franklinville just before 10am when a two-foot long steel rod came crashing through her windshield.

Coletta, a nurse with Upper Township Middle School, was following school buses on a field trip to the Camden Aquarium when the accident occurred. The school's superintendent says even in all that pain, Colletta's main concern was getting the students their medication.

"Because of her efforts, even in that condition, all of our students received the medical attention that they needed, just as a daily basis. So again, it's just a testament to her. She's a very special person."

After the incident, Coletta was able to pull over to the side of the road and call 911.

She was flown to Cooper Trauma Center with a serious eye injury. As of Tuesday morning, there was no word on her condition.
