Phila. City Councilman Takes Aim at Child Obesity

by KYW’s Mike Dunn

A Philadelphia city council committee is looking at why local schoolkids seem to be getting heavier.

“It is a national public health crisis.”

And Councilman Michael Nutter believes childhood obesity is a Philadelphia crisis too, so he was convening a lengthy public hearing on Wednesday on what can be done about it.

He believes its about teaching good nutrition and exercise -- not just to students, but to parents:

“The education component cannot be restricted just to kids.  That’s where the government and health department and other agencies have to drive home and reinforce some of these messages to adults -- because ultimately, the adults determine what kids eat.”

The Centers for Disease Control estimate that 15 percent of
Philadelphia high schoolers are overweight.
