The Fabric Workshop and Museum, 1214 Arch Street

by KYW's Lauren Lipton

Philadelphia is home to many jewels, and one of them is the Fabric Workshop and Museum, at 1214 Arch Street in center city.

(Bussmann:)  "The Fabric Workshop and Museum was founded in 1977 by Marion Boulton Stroud."

She's now executive director, and Jeffrey Bussmann is her assistant:

"She wanted to work with current, contemporary artists, engage them in a method of production involving fiber, fabric, screen printing, that they had never done before.  It really took off."

There are exhibits here that you won't see anywhere else.  Head of education Christina Roberts:

"We've sewn money, we've made horsehair rugs.  We've made silicone rubber carpets."

(Bussmann:)  "This is a work of false silk flowers [photo above].  The dog scarf -- it's essentially the legs of the dog."

And an upcoming exhibit features only Philadelphia artists.

(Bussmann:)  "The artist Tristan Lowe  is creating a giant, fifty-foot whale that is inflatable and is covered with white felt, so it's an albino whale."

They also offer student apprenticeship programs and hands-on tours.  These women were making t-shirts.

(Woman:)  "And here we're going to be doing a background of yellow with purple and pinks on top.  We're having a blast."

And if you like something, you can often take it home.  Tracey Blackman (right) is the museum store manager:

"Exhibition postcards.  That is a cookie jar.  Glitter balls are very popular."

And that's Positively Philadelphia!
