Strategizing the Job Market

by KYW's Dr. Marciene Mattleman

Those graduating from college next month will be facing the worst job market in decades according to Katherine Brooks, author of You Majored in What?

For the 18 million graduates and recent grads, a major in history or philosophy might not lead directly to a job, and finding employment will be frustrating.

For those who concentrated on marketing, journalism the arts and other oversaturated fields—there are more applicants than opportunities.

The book’s subtitle, 'Mapping Your Path from Chaos to Career', is a good description of the material that will help young people and those changing careers. “Wise Wanderings,” a system that dispels myths, is aimed at reducing anxiety and gives concrete suggestions.

Three fatal resume errors, questions to ask yourself about your search, physically mapping out strategies on large poster board, and ways to respond to an ad are all specific tips that should make an applicant think and re-think his/her approach.

Career service directors have endorsed the material that will help those in transition.
